grilled Salmon dinner, and was attended by representatives of all three
local U.S. Coast Guard commands. We were honored to have Rear Admiral
Blore, Commander, U.S. Coast Guard District Thirteen, as our guest
speaker.
We were further honored by a plaque to our local

Nevada, one of the battleships in Hawaii that bore the brunt
of the Japanese attack on Dec. 7, 1941.
Fifty of her crewmen and
officers died.Born in Bellingham, King grew up in Maple
Falls and enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Lynden
High School.
After 20 years in the

Happy
New Year Navy Leaguers,
The 2008 Christmas season is now behind us and I hope that all members
had an enjoyable and memorable time. As I complete my second year of
being your council president, I want to thank each of you for being a
participant in our local Navy League council and I wish to give a
special thank you to the advisory board members for their time and
efforts to helping make our council a great one.
Our council has seen many successes over the past two years : the "Lone
Sailor" statue support , " Mariner Company" support , " Great White
Fleet " ceremony, local U.S.C.G. picnics, Ski to Sea parades, and USS
FORD support. The most memorable just may be our winning of the
national" Donald M. Mackie " award for our great newsletter. Hats off to
Vern Puckett !
The most important calling for our council is to provide support where
we can for our active duty service personnel. They are doing an
outstanding job of preserving the liberties that we all enjoy so much.
I thank each of you for the opportunity to serve as your council
president over these last two years, it has been a memorable experience
for me. Our local council will continue on in the capable hands of our
next president, give him your support as you have given it to me .Thanks
again.
Fellow
Navy Leaguers,
Spring is just around the corner and we are looking forward to a great
year
For our local Navy League and council. The membership approved and
passed our 2008 budget and the council will be able to meet our goals of
supporting our young men and women serving our country in the sea
services.
Let's really try and increase our membership this year by each member
bringing a prospective member to one of our meetings. We have a great
time at our meetings and on day tours, but the important thing is that
we support our young people on active duty and let them know that there
are civilians who deeply appreciate the job that they are doing serving
our country and helping to keep us free.
See you at our next council meeting.
NOVEMBER-DECEMBER ~ 2007
Hello fellow Navy Leaguers,
We are well into fall and it's been a busy schedule. A small group of
our members greeted the U.S.S. FORD at it's homecoming after a West-pac
cruise, our council provided Pizza's for the duty crew on the homecoming
day.
Several Navy League members toured the NOAA research vessel "RAINIER" at
its recent visit to Bellingham. Cdr. Mike Gallagher, NOAA, was our guest
speaker at our October meeting and he provided a very interesting and
informative program for our group, and we had some fantastic salmon as
well!
Our November meeting is the last meeting of the year so be sure to
attend and bring a guest. I wish all members a great Thanksgiving and a
wonderful Christmas season.
Keep the young men and women who are serving our country at home and
around the world in your prayers, they are doing a super job for us.

Winter is pretty much on it's
way out and Spring is just around the corner and that means that our
council will be making plans for some activities; i.e., a day bus
tour , ski to sea parade float, and perhaps even more.

We had a very realistic budget set
forth for 2007 at the January meeting and with all members pulling
together we can reach our goals of increased assistance to the
active military personnel that we support through our local council.
One way that each member can help is to bring a prospective member
to one of our meetings and encourage them to join our local council.
We are consistently having 33-38 members attend each council
meeting, that is a good turnout and I thank each of you that
actively participates at the meetings. Again, let us take a moment
to remember the men and women in uniform that serve this great
country at home and around the world. Jerry
Martin, President |

our worthwhile efforts of supporting the Sea Services.

NOVEMBER - DECEMBER 2006
FROM THE BRIDGE
In February 2005, I took over the helm of our Navy League Council. It
has been a most rewarding experience for me and a distinct privilege to
be surrounded by such dedicated Officers and Board members. If it
weren't for those eight other helpmates my job would have been most
laborious.
Since it is a recommendation of the National that Presidents serve only
a two year term. I am stepping down as of 31 December 2006. At our 22
November meeting you will have a slate of Officers and Board members to
consider and affirm. Those who have been nominated are dedicated Navy
League members, all have given me a true sense of pride because of their
loyalty to purpose. The accomplishments we have made over the past two
years are due in large measure to your Officers, the Advisory Council/
Board and of course you, you the membership.
I will still be around to offer my comments from time to time, and as my
favorite USO trooper used to say, "Thanks for the Memories". I leave you
in excellent hands...
Bob Hilpert, President
On 18 October our Navy League
Council celebrated our 25th Anniversary (20 Oct.1981) with a terrific
Salmon BBQ dinner.
Our guest speaker was RDML William Hilarides, USN, Program Executive
Officer for Submarines, Wash DC.

made a presentation to the Bellingham Council in recognition of their 25
years.

Bellingham Council. Admiral Hilarides, a 1981 graduate of the U.S. Naval
Academy, recounted some of his experiences as a submarine officer and
finally, as the Commanding Officer of the USS Key West (SSN 722). A most
enjoyable evening was had by all Council Members and their guests. Our
hats off to the chefs Messrs. Chic Murray and Orman Darby, the salmon
was outstanding.
