FROM THE BRIDGE -
January - February 2010
Greetings
Navy Leaguers. Happy New Year, and Happy New Decade. I discussed with
some of your Board Members, whether the New Year is stated as “Two
Thousand Ten”, or “Twenty Ten”, and several of them remembered the same
argument was discussed back in 1910, and informed me that it is “Twenty
Ten”.
Our January 27th meeting will present our Council’s
2010 Budget, and the slate of Officers for the year. We hope you will be
able to attend, and enjoy one of our wonderful “Potluck” lunches. We
hope to put together an interesting schedule of Guest Speakers in the
coming year, and are working on a great “Excursion” that should be an
event not to miss. Regards, Ed Scott, President
On January 14th, the National Navy League
President, Mr. Dan Branch, presented the National
Mackie Award to our Bellingham Navy League Council, in a luncheon at NAS
Whidbey Island

SEA SERVICE PROFILES
A Chief
Petty Officer is the 7th, 8th Senior, and 9th
Master Enlisted rank in the U.S. Coast Guard and
the U.S. Navy, and is a Senior non-commissioned
officer.
The grade of Petty
Officer was established by Congress in 1893 for
the Navy and for the Coast Guard in 1920.
Advancement to CPO
carries requirements of time in service,
superior evaluation scores, superior leadership
abilities, and appropriate specialty exams, with
added requirements of continual peer review and
is the most significant promotion within the
enlisted ranks.
A CPO is always
addressed as “CHIEF” by both superiors and
subordinates. In this rank they take on many
more administrative responsibilities, they serve
a dual role as both technical experts and as
leaders with the emphasis being more on
leadership as they progress through the CPO
ranks. A recognized collateral duty for all
Chiefs is the training of junior officers as
well as the men under them. Many
CPO’s have found
themselves in the unique position of being a
department head, some have had the privilege and
honor of being assigned Officer-in-Charge duties
for a special unit, detachment or vessel.
In this short
column I cannot say enough about the legacy of
training and leadership CPO’s have left us over
the years and are still continuing to do so this
day.
In November 1944,
the Navy Mine Sweeper, USS CHIEF (MCM14) was
commissioned in honor of the dedicated service
of the Chief Petty Officer Corps of the U.S.
Navy, as well as for the service of her
namesake, USS CHIEF (AM315), and she sails today
as a proud testament to this tradition. V.
E .Puckett, CPO
USN Retired.
SNAPSHOTS!

Hospital and the Washington National Guard, 81st

Kevin has returned from a second
tour of duty there and was our honored guest
speaker at the November meeting.
Kevin presented a very
interesting narrative of his experiences and
what it was like to ”be there!” In the service
of our great country.
