July - August 2010
Greetings Navy Leaguers,

I hope you
all will be able to attend the Coast Guard Day Picnic, starting at
1200 Noon, on Saturday, August 7th. A local celebration of 220 years
of history for the United States Coast Guard, and a chance to show
our appreciation to our local Coast Guard personnel for all they do
for us. Please join us for some great food, and a great group of
people! Semper Paratus!
We welcome
three new members to our Bellingham Navy League Council, Gary
Schmidt, Bill D'Aoust, and Ed Barnhart. Welcome aboard!

U. S. COAST GUARD CUTTER SEA LION
CHANGE OF COMMAND CEREMONY
On June 10, 2010 , at
10:00 am , there was a change of command ceremony for the Cutter
" SEA LION" at the Bellingham cruise terminal.
The command was passed from BMCM
Louis L. Kitchin to BMCM Chad A. Wendt. Master Chief Kitchin
received orders to Miami, Florida to serve as the Command
Master Chief of the Seventh Coast Guard District. We wish him
and his family well at the new duty station.
We welcome Master Chief
Wendt and his family to our area from the Coast Guard station
at Marathon, Florida and look forward to seeing them at Navy
League and Coast Guard events.
Several awards were given to Sea Lion crew members for
outstanding achievements during Master Chief Kitchin’s command.

At our
monthly dinner meeting of May 10, 2010 our
Bellingham Navy League Council, presented
Annual Sailor of the Year Awards to each of
our local U.S. Coast Guard Commands, SNBM
Eric W. Blecker of Bellingham Station, MK3
Garett R. Brada of USCGC Sea Lion and FN
Benjamin E. Laguana of USCGC Terrapin.

EXHIBIT AT
BELLINGHAM INTERNATIONAL
MARITIME MUSEUM
Our
Bellingham Navy League Council has completed
a very comprehensive exhibit of photo’s and
narrative covering our Puget Sound U.S.
COAST GUARD History. Now open for viewing
from 1200 hrs. to 1500 hrs. Saturdays or by
special appointment.
The
Bellingham International Maritime Museum is
located at; 800 Cornwall Avenue, just across
the street from the GP power plant....

“A
U.S.COAST GUARD AFFAIR!”, AUGUST 7, 2010
The
Coast Guard Picnic will be at Sudden
Valley Beach area on Saturday August
7th, beginning at noon. We are asking
for as many NAVY LEAGUE members
and guests as possible to attend,
showing our support to all Coast Guard
in attendance. We ask you to bring a
salad or dessert. We will provide
burgers and dogs for grilling. ALSO,
there will be grilled salmon for all to
enjoy.
The picnic will include
the crew members and families of the
SEA LION, TERRAPIN, and STATION
BELLINGHAM as well as our COAST
GUARD AUXILIARY members. Bring a
prospective Navy League member and join
in on the fun!
From Bellingham:
Take Lakeway Drive to Sudden Valley...
Lakeway Drive turns into Cable street in
Geneva area.
Turn south on Lake Whatcom Blvd. (an
extension of Lakeway Drive and Cable
St.)
Continue south on Lake Whatcom Blvd
until you reach Sudden Valley (golf
course is on your left side),
immediately past the Fire Station (also
on your left), turn left into gate #1.
Follow the winding
road for about one half mile and take
the 2nd right, proceed down the hill
into the Marina....Find a parking place
adjacent to the tennis courts and walk
to the extreme right into the cookout
pavilion. There you will find the
USCG PICNIC AND ALL OF US!....

all. We support our local and national services by
the very strength of the size and interest we have
within our council membership. Please give it some
thought...Reach out!, let someone on our Advisory
Board know if you have a possible candidate...
A Lunch on us!
Here is a great opportunity for you
to bring a prospective new member to one of our
local business meetings at Squalicum Yacht Club and
see what the Navy League is all about and how we
support our local active duty military personnel.
There is no charge for your guest’s meal. Once you
bring a guest, we hope they will return and join our
council. The offer of a free meal is to help active
members to encourage a prospective member to attend
our meeting. ”Now who can turn down a FREE LUNCH”

The amount is only $25.00 per member and is a very
critical part of our annual budget planning process
that enables the council to move ahead on projects

With a crew of
ten, the SEA LION and Terrapin
are the two 87 foot (WPB) Marine Protector
Class Patrol craft
assigned to Bellingham waters.
BMCM Chad A. Wendt, USCG
is the SeaLions Officer-in Charge.
The Terrapin is commanded by
LTJG Tyler Heffner
Supporting a variety of Coast Guard missions, the 87-foot Marine
Protector Class armed vessel features an integrated electronic bridge
system and a stern-launched rigid inflatable boat, which allows for
safer and more rapid deployment of boarding crews...Local activities
include, but are certainly not limited to, search and rescue, homeland
security. drug enforcement and boating safety.

Station Bellingham is the northern- most station in the district.
Its area of responsibility includes the San Juan Islands north to the
Canadian Border.
During the “ new normalcy” and since Sept. 11, 2001
Station Bellingham averages 150 search and rescue cases, and 300
maritime law enforcement boardings per year.
Every year station personnel assist approximately 150
people, saving dozens of lives and almost a half a million dollars in
property.
